METAL VALUE & COLLECTOR VALUE
Metal explains one part.
The coin explains the rest.
A Morgan dollar and Peace dollar share the same standard silver weight, but their market values can differ. Estimate the metal value, then inspect the date, mintmark, grade, surfaces, and current demand.
Read the Morgan dollar value guide →What the estimate includes
- Quantity and total face value
- Standard coin weight and metal composition
- Published fine gold or silver weight per coin
- Matching indicative gold or silver reference
What the calculator cannot assess
- Whether your coin matches a listed date, mintmark, or variety
- Grade, luster, toning, or eye appeal
- Cleaning, damage, or authentication
- Dealer spread, fees, tax, or shipping

FAST ANSWERS
The questions behind
the number.
01How is a coin’s gold or silver melt value calculated?+
Multiply the published fine-metal weight in troy ounces by the matching gold or silver spot reference, then multiply by quantity. This estimates contained metal value before spreads, fees, or numismatic premiums.
02How much silver is in a Morgan or Peace dollar?+
The standard reference is 0.7734 troy ounce of silver per coin, based on a 26.73 gram coin struck in 90% silver.
03Is melt value the same as collector value?+
No. Melt measures contained metal only. Date, mintmark, variety, grade, surfaces, authenticity, certification, and demand can make a collectible coin worth substantially more.
04Why might a dealer offer less than the displayed melt value?+
The displayed melt value is an estimate, not a guaranteed offer. A dealer may account for verification, refining, price movement, payment costs, and the amount being sold.
