Start with the date and mintmark
Morgan dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Denver. The mintmark sits below the wreath on the reverse; no mintmark normally indicates Philadelphia.
Two coins with the same grade can have very different values because surviving populations and collector demand vary sharply by issue. Confirm the exact date and mintmark before looking at price guides.
How grade and eye appeal affect value
Circulated Morgans are evaluated for remaining detail and wear. Mint State coins are judged for contact marks, luster, strike, and overall eye appeal. A one-point jump can matter dramatically when the certified population thins out.
Attractive natural toning can bring a premium, while questionable or damaged surfaces can make a coin harder to sell.

For an expensive or frequently counterfeited issue, third-party authentication can materially improve buyer confidence and marketability.
