What Is My Morgan Dollar Worth?
A practical method for separating silver content, condition, surfaces, scarcity, and comparable sales.
Start with date and mint
Historic Morgan dollars were struck from 1878 through 1904 and again in 1921. Read the date on the obverse, then inspect the reverse below the wreath for the mintmark. No mark generally means Philadelphia; CC means Carson City, O means New Orleans, S means San Francisco, and D appears on 1921 Denver coins.
Mintage alone does not establish value. Surviving population, grade rarity, demand, and the condition of the specific coin matter more than a single production number.
Calculate the metal reference
A standard historic Morgan weighs 26.73 grams, is 90% silver, and contains about 0.7734 troy ounce of silver. Multiply the current silver price by 0.7734 for an approximate melt reference.
Modern Morgan dollars introduced in 2021 use a different 99.9% silver specification. Do not mix modern issues into comparisons for nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century coins.
Separate wear from damage
Wear comes from circulation. Cleaning, scratches, rim damage, polishing, corrosion, and repairs are separate surface problems. A circulated coin with original surfaces may attract more demand than a brighter coin that someone polished.
Do not clean a Morgan before photographing, selling, or submitting it. Cleaning cannot restore original mint surfaces and can lead to a Details designation instead of a straight grade.
Judge the coin, not only the grade
Two MS64 holders can contain coins with different luster, strike, marks, color, and eye appeal. Inspect focal areas around Liberty’s face and the eagle’s breast. Look for cartwheel luster and note whether toning enhances or hides the surfaces.
For PCGS or NGC coins, verify the certification number on the service’s official site. Compare the recorded date, mintmark, grade, label, holder, and available images. A valid number alone does not eliminate counterfeit risk.
Compare actual sales
Match the same date, mint, variety, grade, grading service, and straight-versus-Details status. Then compare strike, color, and eye appeal. Use completed sales as primary market evidence, and use active listings only to understand current asking prices.
Shipping, buyer’s premium, venue, photography, and market timing affect the total. State whether you mean melt, dealer bid, retail replacement, auction estimate, or insurance appraisal before calling any figure the value.
COLLECTOR FAQ
Questions worth asking
Are all Morgan dollars worth more than their silver?+
Many trade above melt, but the premium varies. Common damaged coins can trade much closer to metal value than rare, attractive, or certified examples.
Where is the Morgan dollar mintmark?+
It appears on the reverse below the wreath and above the letters D and O in DOLLAR.
Should I clean my Morgan dollar?+
No. Cleaning can permanently alter the surfaces and reduce collector demand.
