Silver Spot Price, Melt Value & Premiums
Learn the difference between live spot, contained silver value, and the premium that turns a metal quote into a real coin price.
Spot is the benchmark price for one troy ounce of silver. Melt value equals fine-silver weight multiplied by spot. A retail coin price adds fabrication, distribution, scarcity, condition, certification, and current demand.
Spot price, melt value, and retail price
Spot price is a live wholesale reference. Melt value applies that reference to the fine metal inside a specific item. Retail price is what a buyer pays for the actual coin or bar in the current market.
- Spot: benchmark per troy ounce
- Melt: spot × fine-silver weight
- Premium: retail price − melt value
- Premium percentage: premium ÷ melt value × 100
Why premiums change
Premiums expand and contract with mint supply, fabrication capacity, dealer inventory, retail demand, payment costs, and the specific product. A sovereign one-ounce coin and a generic round can contain the same silver but trade differently.
- Product recognition and liquidity
- Mint or refiner reputation
- Scarcity and collector demand
- Condition and packaging
- Order size and payment method
Junk silver and actual silver weight
U.S. 90% silver dimes, quarters, and half dollars are often priced by face value or actual silver weight. Wear means the theoretical mint weight and the metal in a circulated bag are not always identical. Use a consistent convention and state it clearly.
What a melt calculator tells you
A melt calculation covers contained metal only. Key dates, proof finishes, errors, toning, cleaning, damage, and certified populations require a separate coin evaluation.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Questions collectors ask next
Is spot price the price I can buy silver for?+
Usually no. Physical silver generally sells above spot because the finished product and transaction carry additional costs and market premiums.
What is a troy ounce?+
A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams and is the standard weight unit for precious metals. It is heavier than a standard avoirdupois ounce.
Can a silver coin be worth less than melt?+
Dealer bids can be below the theoretical melt number because of refining, verification, market, and transaction costs. Highly recognizable products often have tighter spreads.
