Read every line of the label
Confirm the coin type, denomination, date, mintmark, variety, numeric grade, finish, Details notation, certification number, and any special pedigree. A headline such as perfect grade does not identify the exact product.
Certification can make a coin easier to describe and compare. It does not make every certified coin a good purchase or guarantee a future price.
Verify, then compare
Navigate directly to PCGS or NGC and enter the certification number. Compare the database result with the listing: date, mint, grade, label style, holder, and archived images.
PCGS warns that counterfeit inserts may reuse real certification numbers. NGC also advises buyers to compare stored images with the coin, label, and holder. After a successful lookup, compare the stored images, label, holder, and coin with the listing.
Understand Details grades
A genuine coin with a significant surface problem may receive a Details designation instead of a straight numerical grade. Common causes include cleaning, scratches, environmental damage, altered surfaces, repairs, and rim damage.
A Details coin can still be rare and desirable. Price it against comparable problem coins, not straight-graded examples with undisturbed surfaces.
Inspect the actual coin and terms
Request sharp obverse, reverse, angled-luster, full-holder, and relevant close-up images. Check the slab for cracks, clouding, residue, or signs of tampering. Note whether the seller uses stock photographs.
Review seller history, return and authenticity policies, shipping insurance, signature requirements, and payment protection. Keep the invoice, listing record, tracking, and correspondence.
Warning signs to take seriously
Stop when the certification record and holder disagree, the seller refuses current photos, the price has no plausible explanation, or the return policy is unclear. Do not buy until the seller resolves those discrepancies in writing.
Price the same date, mint, variety, grade, service, finish, and Details status. Recent completed sales carry more weight than active asking prices.
