Specific Gravity: Why Mounted and Porous Gems Need Extra Caution
Learn what hydrostatic measurements represent, how small errors grow, and when the object—not just the gemstone—is being measured.

Understand the ratio before using the formula
Specific gravity, or SG, is a comparison rather than a weight. Two stones with equal mass can occupy different volumes; two with equal volume can have different masses. SG expresses how dense a material is relative to water under specified conditions. It has no unit. A value written as '2.7 carats' is therefore a weight, not an SG result.
In the simplified hydrostatic calculation, divide the stone's weight in air by the difference between its weight in air and its apparent weight while suspended in water: SG = A ÷ (A − W). Both readings must use the same units. This explanation is for understanding a laboratory record, not a complete testing protocol. Appropriate equipment, suspension corrections, liquid conditions and object suitability still matter.
A small denominator makes small errors important
Consider fictional readings of A = 1.20 grams and W = 0.75 grams. The difference is 0.45 grams, so the simplified result is 1.20 ÷ 0.45, or approximately 2.67. Now imagine that the apparent immersed reading were 0.74 rather than 0.75. The result becomes approximately 2.61. At 0.76, it becomes approximately 2.73. These are arithmetic examples, not values measured from an actual gem.
The changing answer shows why copying extra digits from a calculator does not create measurement accuracy. Before comparing that result with a narrow reference interval, ask whether the balance and setup can reliably resolve the underlying readings. Keep the raw measurements alongside the calculated SG. If repeated measurements wander substantially, investigate the procedure instead of treating their average as a certificate of identity.
The mount belongs to the measured object
If a gemstone remains attached to metal, adhesive, a backing or other stones, a whole-object hydrostatic experiment is not a measurement of the isolated gem. The different components contribute mass and displaced volume. A closed setting may also conceal spaces or trap air. Subtracting a guessed metal weight does not reliably recover the gem's volume or undo all those effects.
GIA's guidance for submitted mounted colored stones distinguishes the whole item's gross weight in grams from an approximate gem carat weight used for fee calculation. That specific policy is not a direct loose-stone measurement. It also does not mean every mounted stone is untestable; laboratories can use other techniques where suitable. Ask what was measured directly and what was estimated, rather than assuming a figure in a jewelry description came from weighing the loose stone.
Pores and internal structure complicate the comparison
Hydrostatic reasoning assumes that the measurement represents the intended object under controlled conditions. A porous or highly fractured specimen introduces questions about retained air, fluid access and whether the object is suitable for immersion at all. A filled, reconstructed or assembled material adds further components. Do not soak an unidentified stone simply to make a household density experiment easier.
GIA's work on root amber illustrates why structure matters. The researchers observed differences among natural, reconstructed and imitation samples, with reconstructed material's SG variation connected to internal structure and gas porosity. The study also used microscopy and spectroscopy. Its measurements describe the studied samples; they are not universal cutoffs for declaring every unknown bead natural, reconstructed or plastic.
Equipment claims are not guarantees for your stone
A published hydrostatic method can work well with a carefully designed setup without making every small-stone home test reliable. In a 1994 Gem-A paper, the author examined small stones using a precision balance and a purpose-built carrier. The lesson is to examine the conditions behind a reported capability, not repeat a minimum stone size as though it applies to any inexpensive scale.
For your own records, separate instrument resolution from demonstrated repeatability. Note whether the carrier was properly accounted for, whether it contacted the container, whether the readings stabilized and whether bubbles were considered. Do not substitute hazardous heavy liquids or improvise solvents to chase a result. When safe, suitable conditions cannot be established, leave SG unmeasured and use an appropriately qualified examiner.
Ask for a conclusion proportionate to the evidence
Suppose a fictional ring listing says 'SG proves this is natural jade.' Ask whether the stone was loose when tested, what readings were recorded and what independent evidence addressed identity and treatment. A seller may have useful supporting documentation. The aim is to clarify it, not assume wrongdoing whenever a number lacks an explanation.
A useful SG record states the object tested, method, approximate result and limitations. It also distinguishes 'consistent with a candidate' from 'identified as that material.' Similarity in SG can help narrow choices, but it does not determine everything a buyer needs to know.

Questions worth asking
Can I estimate SG by how heavy a stone feels?+
Heft can suggest a broad difference between comparable objects, but it is not a measured SG. Size, shape and a mount can make casual comparisons misleading.
Does an SG outside a reference range prove a fake?+
No. First consider measurement error, components, porosity, treatment and whether the reference applies. A mismatch warrants investigation rather than an immediate authenticity verdict.
Should a buyer remove a gem from its setting for testing?+
Not personally. Discuss suitable testing with a qualified professional. Unsetting can damage a stone or setting, and another examination method may answer the question without removal.
